Abstract

Bad smell breath caused from the microbial accumulation in mouth which can be diminished by microbial reduction. Essential oils and capsaicin from chili inhibited the microbial growth, which was suitable to develop as active compounds in oral spray solution against microorganism. From sensorial test the minimum threshold concentration for spicy taste of chili extract is 0.001 mg/mlor 0.0001 %w/v of capsaicin. Essential oils, capsaicin, chili extract and spray preparations were evaluated for their antimicrobial activities using agar diffusion method.  Cinnamon oil exhibited the highest activity against Staphylococcus aureus(MIC=1%v/v) andCandida albicans (MIC=0.1%v/v). MIC of clove oil and peppermint oil against S. aureuswere equally as5%v/v, whereas clove oil (MIC=1%v/v) showed higher activity against C. albicans than peppermint oil (MIC>20%v/v). Both 1%w/v capsaicin solution and chili extract containing 0.02%w/v capsaicin did not inhibit both microorganisms. The developed formula containing 1%v/v cinnamon oil, 0.1%v/v peppermint and chili extract with different concentrations, 0.001, 0.003 and 0.005%w/v notably exhibited the inhibiting growth of S. aureus and C. albicans, depended on chili extract concentration. In conclusions, the cinnamon oil in oral sprays was mainly substance to inhibit microbial growth whereas chili extract demonstrated the synergistic effect.  The formulation development was also performed by using viscosity inducing agent and flavoring agent.  The developed spray could inhibit Streptococcus mutans. The refresh feeling was generated from essential oils, and waking up spray was due to the spicy taste of chili extract. Therefore, these developed sprays would be suitable for reducing the bad breath and refresh. The prepared spray was stable for physical properties and chemical content. In addition, the obtained formulation could be prepared at higher volume.
