Abstract

Enzymes are non-toxic and environmentally friendly biocatalysts. This work examines the effectiveness of enzymes to scour pineapple leaf fibres(PALF). The PALF were blended with cotton to make a yarn and then weaved into a fabric. We also synthesized ZnO nanoparticles to coat on the fabric directly. It was found that cellulose is the best enzymes and it works at 55oc for 2 hrs. It makes the PALF soft and clean without loss in strength. After immersing in ZnO suspension, the investigation by SEM clearly revealed that ZnO was effectively deposited on the cotton surface and that the adhesion was retained after many washing cycles. Antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis of treated samples are excellent. Treated fabrics also show good anti-UV function. All these improvements can help to raise quality and value of the end products.
