Abstract
This investigation ‘Geographic’ Information System for solid waste management in Nakornpathom municipality Mueng District Nakornpathom Province’ conducted by Silpakorn University is granted under Research and Innovation Project of Contributing Technology to Community (Budget year of 2009 and research duration of a year). In this paper, Geographic Information System (GIS) was employed for managing solid waste in Nakornpathom municipality. The data of locations of plastic bins (220 L) and metal bins (small and medium size), and solid waste accumulation routes were collected and transferred to GIS. Buffer areas are created from each bin and overlaid with land use data so that suitability of bin locations and convenience of use are considered. Best routes of waste collection are investigated using network analysis in ArcGIS 9.3.
The study of bin locations, bin types and solid waste collection routes gathered, analyzed and displayed by GIS shows that solid waste management in Nakornpathom municipality can be enhanced efficiently. GIS database can be queried and employed in decision making in terms of solid waste management and planning afterwards. Eventually, public awareness and participation as well as tourism can be increased qualitatively and quantitatively.
